How To Plan Your Perfect Bathroom Vanity

By: Bloomsbury Fine Cabinetry Inc.

Getting excited about planning your new bathroom vanity? We can’t blame you… they’re one of our favourite pieces to design! Bathrooms tend to take up less space, so having a well-thought out, personalized space where you can get ready, relax, and self-pamper, can make all the difference. Not to mention, by injecting your personality and playing with colour and texture, bathroom vanities are a wonderful opportunity to create a seriously beautiful area! Here’s a basic guide to planning your new bathroom vanity.

How to Plan For Your Bathroom Vanity

Plan Around Plumbing

Depending on your project timeline and budget, plumping is going to be crucial. Why? Because if you don’t have the budget to relocate your plumbing, it’s going to dictate both the location and the style of your bathroom vanity. Standard, builder grade plumbing will often limit you to a floor-mounted vanity, so if you have your heart set on a wall-mounted vanity then you’re going to have to move the plumbing hookups for your sink.

Alternatively, one of our favourite design tricks is to put the vanity on legs and box in any plumbing with a cover painted to match the vanity. You can even go as far as to continue your wall and floor tile on the plumbing box to further disguise it.

Moving plumbing is not impossible; it depends on what you want, and the budget you have set aside for the project.

Consider Spatial Problems

Remember, a bathroom doesn’t exactly stay “still” — people move through it, doors swing, drawers open, and so on. Even though you may love the look of your vanity when it’s static, it may present some spatial problems once “life” sets in motion. Think about how you’re actually going to use the space and how it will function for you! For instance, make sure that the door won’t hit an open cabinet door once swung open, there’s room to sit on the toilet, and so on!

Think About Your Needs and Wants

Once you know the general location and size of your vanity, you can start thinking about elements that you need and elements that you want. There’s a difference. Make a list of your “must-haves”, such as a large sink, a space for your toiletries, ample counter space, and so on. Then decide which elements you want, but don’t require; perhaps another sink, a certain style of faucet, or swing out cupboard.

By starting with your must-haves, you’ll be able to figure out which elements are possible budget-wise, space-wise and how you’ll incorporate them into the design.

Get Creative with Storage Design

This is the fun part — that is, if you like organizing as much as we do! Storage space doesn’t have to be dull. Consider what you want to store in your drawers and cupboards and get creative about the best ways to arrange them.

For instance, you may decide to build customized drawers that have built-in compartments and containers for your small toiletries. Or, you might decide to build a pull out shelving unit where you can store a trash or laundry bin.

Let Your Personality Shine Through in the Final Touches

Putting the final touches on your vanity is where you get the chance to let your personal style shine through. Think about getting creative with your cabinet colours and hardware materials. For instance, dark green cupboards with a white marble countertop and gold hardware will give your vanity a truly unique look. Or, you might prefer a more simple dark stained wood with black hardware for a classic look. Have fun with it, and get creative!
